So often do I read about the troubled Mommy Dearest, mother/daughter pairing, while so seldom am I treated to a celebration of a much treasured soul bonding between a perfect in every way daughter (yes absence does breed an alternate reality) and her better than perfect mom (who does possess a strong, delusional Neptune in her astrological natal chart). Here’s my small attempt to rectify this heinous breach in reporting with a snippet of the much awaited reunion I’m anticipating.
My daughter is flying home today for the summer. It’s roughly 8 hours of flying time from Seattle, WA–where she’s been attending college at Cornish College of the Arts–to our new home in West Palm Beach, FL. My prodigal daughter, and my only off-spring—if you don’t count my winningly handsome King Charles Cavalier–is my highly favored child (not simply by default) and has been away for what feels like an eternity–since her January break, nearly four months prior. I tell her often how fortunate it is that her parents had no other child, as she would’ve inevitably received the lion share of our love and attention and this lesser sibling would’ve been sorely neglected and given the cupboard under the stairs.
Oh precious daughter of my heart, princess of my pocketbook, and fellow latte/coffee shop aficionado, how I long for our philosophical musings at Starbucks, where we congratulate ourselves for being the first to discover Chris Pine in Princess Diaries 2; where we berate the talented Zac Efron for not taking his career more seriously, though we secretly enjoy him taking off his shirt so gratuitously; where we predict great things ahead for Alden Ehrenreich; and we ponder the mysteries of how Kingsman 2 will bring back our beloved Colin Firth, who previously died most violently!
I tell her often how fortunate it is that her parents had no other child, as she would’ve inevitably received the lion share of our love and attention and this lesser sibling would’ve been sorely neglected and given the cupboard under the stairs.
Of course, there will be much banter on the topic of our shared interest in writing, we will mutually praise our own latest novels–as though we were the best thing since Jane Austen–and there will, of course, be many lessons and heated synastry discussions on astrology.
I’ve forgotten what it’s like to laugh so heartily from the belly that I nearly faint from the oxygen loss, as my daughter recounts her most recent embarrassing tales—of which she has all too many! In fact, she’s not even home yet and is already texting me of her recent pat-down at the airport today, due to an overly sparkly t-shirt she thoughtlessly donned.
My wonderfully special daughter is returning home today, in time for my birthday, and we have tickets to see MUSE and 30 Seconds to Mars at the Fairgrounds. Hopefully there will be no incidents of stalking to later report on, but knowing us, there will be a happening of some sort to write about in the next post!… Hope you stay tuned.
